ACTION & ACHIEVEMTNTS :
Health programmes :
Health services in the rural areas of Khurda & Puri district are in disarray. There is a severe lack of man and material to provide quality health services to the people. As the Government health centres (PHCs and CHCs) do not function properly most often than not people do visit the health centres to avail health services MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST is organized several health camps in the rural areas. In the period of reporting MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST organized health camps and health centres at all G.P.s under khurda District. Practicing physicians provided free health check up to the people. The poor and needy were given medicines free of cost. A part from providing health services another objective of the programme was to make the people aware regarding their responsibility to keep good health. The society observed two most important days named “World Health Day” and “Mothers Day” for the remembered to all mothers for their genuine affection and contribution for the society.
Mother & Child Health (MCH) :
If recent statistics are any indication that the health status, especially that of mother and children can said to be less that satisfactory. Orissa has got the dubious distinction of having the highest. Despite all efforts it is the women and children who suffer from high morbidity and morality. Keeping this in view, the organisation has been implementing REH Programme in the Bhubaneswar Block of Khurda District.
Infant Mortality :
Rate in the entire country, which stands at 97 per 1,000 live births. Similarly 361 mothers in every 1,000 die while giving birth to their babies. Despite many efforts at Government and No-Government levels various programmes aimed at population control have not succeeded. The less than speetacular results on Family Planning front can be attributed to high level of IMR, low status of women, strong preference for the boy child, and rampant poverty. MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST is contributing its bit in controlling the population by providing effective RCH services to the target population.
To set the things right a series of awareness camps are organized in Bhubaneswar Block of Khurda District, in which the women (young and expectant mothers) were targeted who were explained the importance of small family. They were also explained regarding various issues relating to reproductive and child health. In these programmes more than 300 women participated. The occasion was also utilized to immunize 35 pregnant mothers and 46 children.
HIV/AIDS Awareness Camps :
Over the past few years HIV/AIDS have become a dreaded disease and spreading very fast. The rural areas of the district are also not immune from its grip. As far as the present leel of knowledge is concerned there is no curative medicine for it. The only way out is to prevent it. Thus the organisation is trying its best to prevent the dreaded disease through awareness creation. For this rally, meetings were organized on WORLD AIDS DAY on December in cuttack to Bubaneswar NH-5 Health is wealth is one of the motto of the Society. A man may be rich yet without health all his wealth will count for nothing the society has conducted seminar on Awareness on Aids with the collaboration of the local Medical Officer, expressed about how save from aids. Seventy women and men were participated in the seminar.
Horticulture :
A farmer fair was held on fruit cultivation and development of orchards. They were demonstrated as idea on mixed cropping along with horticulture crops in their respective backyards. The objectives of this programme were to learn better land use ethics and augment amongst the local farmers. The farmers were also imparted training on floriculture, which is a very prospective income generating programme with involvement of limited resources.
Legal Aid Service :
A number of 50 destitute have been provided legal aid services and 35 have been provided legal advice. To solve the problem of torture and exploitation of women both formal and informal action are taken to provide justice.
Women Empowerment Programme :
A major area of concern for the organisation has been the “Women Development”. Since few years it has taken up well planned programmes of awareness generation, group formation, leadership development, skill training and income generation programmes for women. In fact it is the part of broad framework of raising the status of women of the area, especially of the under privileged categories. Secondly, the strategy of the organisation towards any developmental efforts had been the involvement of women as catalysts. In order to involve the village women in the process, the first and foremost approach has been women meetings and awareness camps for them. Last year the organisation has organized a number of women meetings, training and awareness camps. All the target villages had been covered and 500 women of Khurda Block of khurda District, were trained in it, each camp was of two day duration. The camps have experienced the lectures, discussions, audio-visual shows, leaflets and posters etc. as the method of communication. The theme has covered women related subject like :
Society, women and their rights.
Atrocities on women.
Women an law.
Need for women’s organisation.
Economic independence and self employment of women.
Women and environment .
Women Leadership.
Anti Dowry Campaign.
Small Saving.
SHG Formation.
Opportunities and facilities for women from Govt. and Non Govt. sources.
Coir Training :
Under the programme, 18 nos. of unemployed OBC youth, 15 girls and 3 boys were provided with training in Coir Training for 6 months. All the trainees successfully completed the training. The trained youths have already started self employment programmes at the slum areas of Bhubaneswar Municipality Cooperation. The organisation is taking action to provide employment/ Self-employment opportunities for the rest.
Women Atrocity :
“MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST” has a well trained team on providing training a grass root leel organisation. This year the organisation conducted six training programmes on a number of issues training from SHG and Micro-finance to Organisation Development. During the year more than 26 NGOs in around Khurda district benefited out of these Mushroom innovation training programmes. The organisation was prepared 10 beds of Mushroom for demonstration.
S.HG. Training Programme :
Atrocity against women is on the rise in the rural areas, Due to ignorance, the women cannot take remedial steps against the perpetrator of crimes. In order to educate the women regarding their rights and legal safeguards available to them the organisation organized one workshop on Women Atrocities in which more than 200 women participated. In this workshop, the women narrated their harrowing experiences to the audience. Resource persons including the experts explained to the participating women regarding the legal and constitutional safeguards to them in case of violation of their rights.
Vocational Training :
The youth today are at crossroads. After finishing education they cannot find many jobs as there are not many jobs for them nor they can go back to the village to undertake farming and related activities. Again their present level of skill does not permit them to get a job for themselves in the highly competitive job market. In order to equip the youth with skill training “MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST” organized several vocational training programmes for the youth especially for the women.
Vocational Training SC Women :
A Vocational Training on Computer for SC women was conducted by the organisation during the year at Bhubaneswar. Training in Computer was given to 20 nos. of SC women/girls for three months. One women volunteer of the organisation was appointed as instructor. The organisation is taking steps to provide employment Self-employment opportunities to the trainees.
Readymade Garments :
Tailoring and embroider comes naturally to women. But most of the time this natural talent is not sophisticated enough to earn them a livelihood. Keeping his reality in mind “MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST” continued its training programme on tailoring and dress designing exclusively for women. They were given raining in the whole gamut of dress designing, embroidery, appliqué work, patch work and fabric printing. After the training programme many of the women have established their own units and some have found suitable employment.
Income Generation Activities :
To encourage the youth for self employment the organisation is implementing several income generation programmes as model units. These activities are intended to be models for the target groups so that they can emulate the activities and can be self employed. During the year of reporting “MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST” undertook activities like poultry, goatary, dairy, pisiculture etc. in which more than 100 people, mostly the youths benefited. Reporting “MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST” with the active involvement of the local beneficiaries directly implemented all these programmes. After doing the activities on an experimental basis many of these people have taken up their own Income Generation Activities. We are trying to arrange funds for them through local financial institutions.
Water and Sanitation Programme :
Safe disposal of solid and liquid waste is a major problem in the rural area which is not well equipped to handle this problem. The problem is compounded by open defecation. The problem seems to be a behavioral one, similarly easy accessibility to clean drinking water is a matter of right for everyone. But unfortunately the people do not have access to potable w2ater resulting in diseases like diarrhea gastro entities, skin diseases tec. Most of the wells and ponds are either dry or contain muddy water. More than not the water in these sources are contaminates. So “MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST” is regularly taking steps to disinfect the water sources. In order to make people aware regarding the hazards of open defecation “MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST” conducted a series of programmes including padayatra, rallies, meetings, poster campaign etc. the cultural troops of the organisation also staged several street plays in order to bring home the message of water and sanitation. A campaign was launched to use sanitary latrines instead of open fields.
Social Forestary & Nursery Rising :
A social forestry camp was held in Bhubaneswar block of Khurda District. The main objective of such training camp was to illustrate in the poor and cons of social forestry. Under this programme the farmers were given an idea how to grow the requirements for maintaining their livelihood. They were imparted training on nursery growing and plantation procedures with respect to need based requirement. Around 600 seedlings were distributed to 250 farmers with and objective to develop self sufficiency in their fuel wood, fodder and other small timber requirements of the farmers.
Programme on Environment :
Despite various efforts at Government levels efforts to preserve the forest cover has not paid off. This may be attributed to non involvement of the people. Thus the organisation is taking care to involve people in protecting whatever forest is left out. In this period of reporting school environment protection among the school children.
Training Improved Agricultural Practice :
The entire rural areas of the Khurda District thrive on agriculture and related activities. More than 80% of the population lives on it. But over the past few years the productivity has gone due to frequent failure of monsoon and excessive usage of chemical fertilizer. Moreover the farmers are using the age-old practice of cultivation resulting in more labour cost and less yield. The other problem plaguing agriculture in the area is that farmers are adhering to mono crop, i.e, cultivation of rice. As rice is a water intensive crops even the slightest erratic rainfall could damage the crops. “MAMATA CHARITABLE TRUST” is trying to train the farmers in alternative cropping practices like vegetable farming, horticulture farming, medicinal cultivation which are not only more profitable but also less water intensive. More than 200 farmers were trained on themes like mixed cropping, usage of green manure, cultivation of cash crops etc, To encourage the farmers many of them were provided.
